When the US entered World War II at the end of 1941, Lombard traveled to her home state of Indiana for a war bond rally with her mother, Bess Peters, and Clark Gable’s press agent, Otto Winkler. Lombard was able to raise a Record Breaking $2 Million Dollars in defense bonds in a single evening. Her Party was scheduled to return to Los Angeles by Train, but Lombard was anxious to get home quicker, she suggested a coin flip deciding if they would travel by train or Plane.

Approximately 23 Minutes into the Flight, The Plane crashed into “Double Up Peak” all 22 aboard, including 15 army servicemen, were killed instantly. Shortly after her death the United States Government commission a new Liberty Ship to be named after the late film star, “The SS Carole Lombard”.
