Description

(2015) "Barney Fife", Don Knotts - Illustration No.103 drawn in Graphite on 96lb. Canson Bistrol thick board sheet stock. Pencils used: 6h, 4h, h, hb, b, 2b, 5b, 6b - Drawing time: 84 Hours. The most difficult section of this illustration was the area just below the rim of his cap. I had to use four layers of shading to create that blending effect from left to right to create the illusion of deep shadowing on his forehead from one side to the other. Note: I had to do one last minute adjustment to his closed left eye which had given me trouble the entire time I was drawing this piece, The light that reflected off his pupil was too bright and too high making him look like he had tears in his eye, had to darken the pupil a bit and drop it lower .

Benard “Barney” P. Milton Oliver Fife, is a fictional character in the American television program The Andy Griffith Show, portrayed by comic actor Don Knotts. Barney Fife is a deputy sheriff in the slow placed, sleepy southern community of Mayberry, North Carolina. He appeared in the first five black and white seasons (1960-1965) as a main character and, after leaving the show at the end of season five, made a few guest appearances in the following three color seasons (1965-1968). He also appeared in the first episode of the spin-off series “Mayberry R.F.D. (1968-1971). Don Knotts had previously co-starred on “The Steve Allen Show”, along with Tom Poston, Pat Harrington and Louis Nye – Which is where a frantic, twitching “Man on the street” character was introduced. He created Deputy Barney Fife in the same fashion, as a hyperkinetic but comically inept counterpart to Mayberry’s practical and composed Sheriff Andy Taylor.
In 1999 TV Guide ranked him ninth on its 50 Greatest TV Characters of All Time list.
